Networks have been looking for variety show programming as a cheap option to fill their schedules. But the idea has been sought by executives due the format’s rock-bottom cost, cross-promotion possibilities and advertiser-friendly format. In other words, the neo-variety show is a retread designed to solve financial woes rather than an act of programming inspiration — a bean-counting origin story that makes it tough to imagine an exciting final product.

NBC’s variation, in particular, seemed unlikely to attract a broad audience given O’Donnell’s divisive personality. Stocked with appearances by Alannis Morrisette, Ne Yo, Rachael Ray, Harry Connick Jr., Clay Aiken and Gloria Estefan, along with Minnelli, Baldwin, Griffin and Krakowski, the lineup’s appeal also skewed heavily female for a primetime show airing on the eve of a family holiday.

One special that did perform well last night was Barbara Walters’ interview with Barack and Michelle Obama (11.6 million, 3.0 rating). The interview nearly matched “CSI: NY” in the 10 p.m. hour and gave ABC its highest non-awards show rating in the time period in more than a year.

AUSTIN — Made almost exclusively from his own words, “And Everything Is Going Fine” nevertheless constructs an oral autobiography unlike those for which Spalding Gray was famous during his lifetime — one bound together by no thematic conceit or metaphor-rich biographical episode, focused instead on capturing the full arc of the performer’s life. A valuable coda to the storyteller’s cinematic legacy, it doesn’t have the pull of “Swimming to Cambodia” but should be embraced by those who followed Gray’s career and were saddened by its early end.
Segments included Kathy Griffin impersonating Nancy Grace, Alec Baldwin hitting Conan O’Brian with a pie, O’Donnell singing “City Lights” with Liza Minnelli and Jane Krakowski doing a product-placement-themed striptease for White Castle burgers and Crest Whitestrips.

Critics were not kind. The NY Times described it as “hokey comedy with an enemies list.” TV Guide called it a “ghastly ego trip.” And the LA Times asked, “Rosie, what on earth were you thinking?”

Americas Country Sweetheart Carrie Underwood

This 26 year old American country singer has rose to fame since her debut on the forth season of American Idol in 2004. After her American Idol win, Carrie Underwood has captured the hearts of all ages, with her girl-next-door personality and amazing vocal talent.

Carrie Underwood has released three multi-platinum albums.  Carrie’s hit songs from her first album, “Before He Cheats” and “Jesus Take The Wheel” remained on both Canada and the United States pop hits chart for weeks on end.  This initial album, entitled, Some Hearts earned seven times platinum and was historically recognized as the fastest selling country music album of all time.  Some Hearts also landed Underwood two advertising deals with both Hershey chocolate and Sketchers shoes.

In 2006 Carrie Underwood won her first CMT Country Music Award in the Horizon Female Vocalist category.  This award led to a whirlwind of over ninety-three additional awards thereafter, notably, the World’s Best-Selling New Artist in 2008 and CMT Female Vocalist of the year in 2008.

While touring and continuing to work on her second album, Carrie Underwood was inducted into the honorable, Grand Ole Opry.  Underwood stated on the night of the induction, “I promise I’ll do everything I can to not make you regret it”.  Since that night, Underwood has sold over 10.4 million albums in the United States alone; blatantly proving her statement as truth.

Carrie Underwood was born to Stephen and Carole Underwood in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and was raised on her parents’ farm in the rural town of Checotah, Oklahoma.  She has two older sisters, Shanna and Stephanie. Her father worked in a sawmill while her mother was an elementary school teacher.  During her childhood, Underwood had performed at local talent shows and at her church. In 1996, she was in the process of getting a contract with Capitol Records, but the deal was canceled when the recording company’s management changed.

Besides being a talented singer, Underwood was also a good student. Underwood graduated from Checotah High School in 2001 as salutatorian. After high school, she attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, graduating magna cum laude in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication and an emphasis in journalism. For two years during the summer, Underwood performed in Northeastern State University’s Downtown Country show in Tahlequah. She also competed in numerous beauty pageants at the university and was selected as Miss NSU runner-up in 2004.

Carrie Underwood has also chosen to use her good fortune to give back.  Whether it be visiting American Troops in the Middle East or traveling to the desserts of Africa for ‘American Idol’s Give Back’, this starlet uses her extra time to assist.  Underwood, as a vegetarian, has also chosen to work closely with the Humane Society of the United States; continually donating to causes for animals needing rescue. Underwood also lent her voice to benefit cancer research. She was featured on the 2008 song, Just Stand Up. The proceeds benefited Stand Up to Cancer. As a result of their fund raising efforts, the SU2C scientific advisory committee, overseen by the American Association for Cancer Research was able to award 73.6 million dollars towards new groundbreaking research.

While Underwood has only been in the public eye for five years, her current success may only mark the beginning of a long and successful career.

Why do we need wildlife sanctuaries?

People are often confused why we need wildlife sanctuaries. It is understandable. We already have zoos and animal shelters that house animals.

However, it is important to remember that zoos and animal shelters serve a completely different purpose. Zoos, for example, are designed to display animals to the public. However, they are not necessarily focused on breeding. Wildlife sanctuaries are far more focused on conservation and less focused on exhibition. Zoos are also far more intrusive into the natural lives of animals. Also, zoos are more often located in urban areas. Wildlife sanctuaries are typically located in rural areas where more space is available.

Animal shelters usually do not focus on conservation either. They mostly hold more common animals such as cats and dogs. Animal shelters focus on adoption while zoos and wildlife sanctuaries try to provide a permanent home for animals. Animal shelters sometimes euthanize animals if they are not adopted in time. Wildlife sanctuaries almost never euthanize animals.

Wildlife sanctuaries are designed to help protect many endangered species in the world. They are spread out all over the world. Wildlife sanctuaries are often but not always much larger than zoos. Some wildlife sanctuaries cover as many as fourteen thousand acres. They usually also have smaller diversity of animals than zoos. Many wildlife sanctuaries are focused on helping several species. The largest zoo in the United States is the Red McCombs Wildlife zoo in Texas. It covers twelve thousand acres. San Diego Zoo is the most diverse zoo in the United States. In fact, it has over 900 different species. Many wildlife sanctuaries are underground and not very well known by tourists. Although many wildlife sanctuaries do exhibit animals, animals are often not caged.

Wildlife sanctuaries are significantly different from zoos and animal shelters. They are necessarily to help endangered species survive.

The Evolution of the Garfield Comic Strip

June 19th, 1978 saw the birth of one of the most beloved and best known comic strips of all time, Garfield, a tale of an ornery but lovable orange tabby cat, his owner Jonathan Q. Arbuckle, better known simply as Jon, and the long-eared but equally adorable Odie the dog. Garfield was the brain child of cartoonist Jim Davis and over the past three decades, has evolved into a billion dollar empire as well as holding the record for being the most widely syndicated comic strip in the entire world, appearing in just over 2,500 different publications.

Over the years, Garfield has developed a rather distinct personality that centers around his laziness, his sarcasm and selfishness, his incredible love of napping and eating lasagna, as well as his deep hate for dieting. The very first characters to appear in the strip, besides Jon and Garfield, were Odie the yellow Beagle, who made his debut in August of the same year, followed by Pooky a few months later, who is Garfield’s best friend and stuffed teddy bear with whom he regularly communicates with just as if he too were a “living” animal.

In addition to the regular gang, the comic strip also includes a host of other major and secondary characters, such as Nermal, the small gray, striped kitten who routinely irritates Garfield with his eternal cuteness, as well as Arlene, a furry pink cat who has an ongoing love-hate relationship with the large orange tabby cat. And finally, Garfield’s veterinarian and Jon’s love interest, Dr. Liz Wilson who first appeared back in June of 1979. As Jon and Liz grew closer in recent years, Garfield became jealous but soon learned to make friends with his old vet and their relationship continues to blossom today.

A few years later, Jon’s family, characters that are loosely based on Davis’ own family, including his Mom, Dad, Grandma, and brother Doc Boy, made their appearance in the strip and the Arbuckle clan regularly get together on the family’s farm. Other characters that make occasional visits to the comic strip include Irma the waitress, Herman the mailman, Binky the clown, and a few neighbors, like the unseen Mrs. Feeny who is regularly tormented by Garfield and his mischievous deeds.

After the amazing popularity of the comic strip, Garfield soon became a television series known as “Garfield and Friends” which ran from 1988 to 1994 and featured the usual faces as well as Mr. Burnside, the Arbuckle’s next-door neighbor, Penelope Pussycat, and Cactus Jack, who is a friend of Jon. Another comic strip also created by Jim Davis, U.S. Acres, which was later renamed Orson’s Farm, also was incorporated into the show.

Garfield also eventually made his way to the big screen and the comic strip spawned three movies, starting with the 2004 “Garfield: The Movie,” and its sequel “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties” which was released in June of 2006, and the completely computer-generated “Garfield Gets Real” in 2007 that was written by Davis who took two full years to complete the script.

Garfield continues to be perhaps the world’s most beloved feline as people all over the globe enjoy reading about his many amusing antics.
