Adelphi University is proud to host “Animal Portraits: Images of the Wild,” an exhibition of wildlife photographs by National Geographic Wildlife Photographer and Adelphi alumnus Ted Schiffman M.A. ‘68, in the University Swirbul Library Gallery, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY through March 1, 2011. On February 9, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., a reception and book signing will take place for Mr. Schiffman’s latest intriguing publication Treefrogs: Prehistoric Survivors with a Global Message.
“Animal Portraits: Images of the Wild”features more than 25 portraits of wildlife animals. From the stoic regal lion, to a herd of elephants, close-up images of various cat eyes, and graceful flamingo. These images present the animal kingdom in all its glory.
Mr. Schiffman’s publication Treefrogs: Prehistoric Survivors with a Global Message includes more than 60 extraordinary color images of native treefrogs, a project spanning 25 years. The publication takes us on a photographic journey visiting the lilliputian world of these animals, living in the North American backyard habitats we share. Remarkable survivors from prehistoric times, these petite gymnasts and nighttime musicians are delivering a colossal environmental message. Tree frogs are an indicator species, a barometer of an environment’s health.
Mr. Schiffman has been a photographer for 40 years. He developed an interest and direction in color photography as a natural outlet for his many years of training and study as an artist. His entire collection of images illustrates not only his fine artistic and photographic abilities, but also a love and respect for the inherent beauty of nature’s many subjects. He has exhibited at numerous galleries, institutions, and universities. His prints are collected privately and by institutions and corporations throughout the United States and Europe. He received his M.A. from Adelphi University in 1968.
The Swirbul Library Gallery is open Sunday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information about this and other upcoming art exhibitions, please visit http://www.adelphi.edu/artmuseum/exhibitions/.

Senior management must find ways to motivate employees in order to have their people perform at high levels. This is also true for associations and their members.
Motivation is required for any company employee at any level but is even more crucial for those in roles that have more direct consequences on revenues. An obvious example would be the company sales force. Another is customer service staff since they have direct interaction with customers. Dealing with complaining customers day in and day out can be a very demotivating. Production teams can also fall into this category because overall quality is impacted by the efforts of assembly people.
During booming economic periods, many companies made sure that there were incentive programs to help motivate employees. They were very aware that if some employees were not happy, they could easily jump ship to other companies. This was particularly true for valuable positions of high demand in the market. I’ve seen this type of jumping many times with top pharmaceutical sales representatives during my career and quite often, these high performers would end up with a direct competitor. Competitors love to snap up high performers much like professional sports teams do.
Some senior management might think that because we are in tougher times, the risk of losing valuable employees to competitors would be much lower. There might be a perception that most people would be happy just to have a job during times of recession and layoffs. There might be a lower emphasis to motivate employees since there probably won’t be much jumping around to other companies.
However, this may not be true. The security of a job is not the only motivating factor among many employees, particularly younger ones. Even though it’s true that people may stay with a company without much motivation from senior management, it doesn’t mean that they will be motivated to perform their jobs at high levels. Quality will suffer as a result. This is why companies still need motivation during both good and bad times.
Of course, it is great to have inspiring company leaders and managers to motivate their staff. But messages from the same internal people over and over again can grow stale. This is why external motivational speakers can be such a plus during company meetings. External speakers can motivate company audiences in different ways and angles that employees have not been exposed to. It becomes a fresh source of motivation for the company. External motivational speakers can use examples that are not directly connected to a company’s business but still make them relevant for the audience.
Having been on both sides as a motivational speaker and as an audience member, I can say that the best way for a company to motivate its staff is to bring in an external motivational speaker to address its people and then have senior management regularly reinforce those key messages made by the speaker. This will help employees keep motivated since in order to be successful, companies need to make sure that their people are motivated on a regular basis over time. Motivation is like vitamins, as we all need regular doses in order to keep performing at high levels.

Graphic Novels

Watchmen was published in an era when the comic book genre was dominated by superheroes and antiheroes with black and white views about good and evil. It is a parody of the overman in dystopia. A combination of dark, pulp, and deconstructed comic book style, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon offered something that caters to both comic book aficionados and common readers.
Watchmen is not your typical graphic novel. It defies all other conventions in the comic book genre and deviates from the usual larger-than-life comic book characters we have come to know. Instead of an alien from Krypton or a dark knight in a bat mobile, Watchmen offers a different set of superheroes with insecurities, imperfections, and emotional disturbances.
The graphic novel is somewhat an oxymoron. On one hand, this is slated to a wider range of audience, but this doesn’t make the graphic novel an easy read. It is designed to be read more than once. Watchmen brings the readers into a dynamic state, into a questioning mode of thinking. Every encounter with this comic book elicits a different response from readers. As said by Moore and Gibbon in an interview, they intended the graphic novel to hold different meanings to different people.
The art and structure of the graphic novel are equally fascinating and original as its content. Watchmen showcases unseen features of the comics medium and puts its strong points to the fore. In an interview, Moore said, “What I’d like to explore is the areas that comics succeed in where no other media is capable of operating”. The graphic novel became ultimately different from the movies.
What’s more unique about the art is that it exploits the use of panels. The creators really intended its panels to be distinct from other comic books. The use of symbolisms is also superb giving reference to the story’s theme. This is why reading the graphic novel once betrays the purpose of the act of reading Watchmen. As the plot thickens, the readers are drawn into an intellectual challenge of piecing the puzzles together to fully grasp the depth of the novel.
It is important to note that the novel might not be aimed at people who are not familiar with the comic book genre. Appreciating the profundity of this comic book necessitates knowledge about genre and exposure to other graphic novels. Since Watchmen is a hard read, it is easy for someone unfamiliar wit the world of comic books to be lost in the ebbs of symbolisms and themes.
Watchmen is a great alternative to comic fans tired of the usual goody-two-shoe and perfect hero stories. Although this is a difficult to decode for beginners, for comic book enthusiasts, this is a knockout.
